Paul Teutul Sr & Paul Teutul Jr from American Chopper
Paul Teutul Sr, born in Yonkers, New York in 1949, is the founder of Orange County Choppers (OCC) and the gruff, larger-than-life star of American Chopper. A former Merchant Marine, he turned his passion for motorcycles into a business, building custom bikes for clients including Intel, NASA, the New York Yankees, the FBI, Wendy’s, and Caterpillar Inc. His fiery temper and occasional arguments with his son became a signature part of the show.
His son, Paul Teutul Jr, was born in 1974, and as the OCC’s chief designer has been responsible for some of the show’s most iconic bikes, including the Black Widow and Fire Bike. However, clashes with his father led to his dramatic firing in 2008 and the founding of his own shop, Paul Jr. Designs.
The Teutuls’ family drama, combined with their jaw-dropping builds, made American Chopper a reality TV sensation which you can watch on discovery+. After their split, both Sr. and Jr. continued to thrive in the custom bike world, each forging their own path and leaving a lasting impact on motorcycle culture.
The Irwin Family

Robert, Bindi and Terri Irwin with a giant tortoise.
Steve Irwin, born in 1962 in Victoria, Australia, grew up surrounded by wildlife at his family’s Beerwah Reptile Park, later known as Australia Zoo. From a young age, he showed a remarkable affinity for animals, especially reptiles, helping his parents care for and relocate crocodiles and snakes. Irwin’s fearless approach and infectious enthusiasm made him a global sensation as the host of The Crocodile Hunter where he introduced millions to the wonders – and dangers – of the natural world with his signature catchphrase, “Crikey!”
Beyond television, Steve was a passionate conservationist. He and his wife Terri founded Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, established wildlife reserves, and expanded Australia Zoo into a leading conservation and education centre. Irwin’s energetic advocacy raised awareness about endangered species and habitat preservation, and his innovative crocodile management techniques are still used all over the world. His sudden death in 2006 came as a great shock to all, but his influence on wildlife protection and public engagement endures. Watch Steve’s incredible story – from his love and partnership with his wife Terri to his amazing work as a wildlife conservationist – in The Steve Irwin Story, here on discovery+.

Together, the Irwin family has ensured that Steve’s legacy thrives, inspiring new generations to protect the planet’s most vulnerable creatures.
Today, the Irwins remain at the heart of Australia Zoo and international conservation efforts, blending education, entertainment, and activism. Crikey! Parker Schnabel

The Guru of Gold, Parker Schnabel
Born in Haines, Alaska, in July 1994, Parker Schnabel is a third-generation gold miner and one of the breakout stars of Discovery Channel’s Gold Rush. Raised at his family’s Big Nugget Mine, Parker took on major responsibilities as a teenager, quickly earning a reputation for his work ethic and leadership. By his early twenties he had mined over $13 million in gold, and by 2025, his total haul surpassed 63,000 ounces worth roughly $100 million – making him one of the most successful young miners in the Klondike, a region in Canada’s Yukon territory famous for the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s.
Parker joined Gold Rush at just 15, famously using his college fund to start his own mining operation – a bold move that paid off handsomely and defined his forward-thinking approach. His relentless drive, high-stakes bets, and on-screen clashes with rivals like Tony Beets have made him a fan favourite. He’s also fronted spin-offs such as Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail, tackling his grandfather John Schnabel’s historic mining routes in Canada as well as other legendary mine sites around the world, including Papua New Guinea, Guyana, Australia, and New Zealand.
Now in his thirties, Parker continues to push the limits of what’s possible in the high risk, high reward world of mining, inspiring a new generation of miners and viewers alike. His story is one of passion, grit, and the pursuit of success – both in front of the camera and deep in the gold-rich dirt of the Yukon.
If bling is your thing, there are some more great Gold Rush spin-offs, including Gold Rush: Dave Turin’s Lost Mine, where gold miner Dave attempts to find gold in a long abandoned mine. Gold Rush: Mine Rescue with Freddy and Juan follows gold recovery expert Freddy Dodge as he helps struggling mine owners to strike it rich. If he can increase the owner’s weekly gold haul, he gets a cut of the profits, but if he fails, he doesn’t charge a dime. And from land to sea, Gold Rush: White Water is on the trail of Dustin Hurt as he puts his life on the line attempting to find gold beneath the waters of one of Alaska’s wildest creeks.
Ed Stafford

Ed Stafford, one of the planet's greatest explorers
A former captain in the British Army, Edward James Stafford is a legendary British explorer and the first man in history to have walked the length of the Amazon River. Ed’s epic 859-day expedition tested his endurance against extreme terrain, wildlife threats, and some uncomfortable encounters with the locals. His journey was turned into a Discovery Channel documentary viewed in over 100 countries.
Since then, Ed’s become a prominent face on Discovery, starring in survival series such as Naked and Marooned, where he attempts to survive for sixty days alone on Olorua, a tiny uninhabited island near Fiji. Left For Dead gives Ed ten days to escape from some of the world’s most extreme and inhospitable environments, including Panama’s Darien Gap, the searing heat and brutal altitude of Bolivia’s Atacama Desert, the Annamite Mountains deep in the jungle of Laos, and southern Bulgaria’s mighty Rhodope Mountains.
In First Man Out, Ed’s in a race against time as he competes against the world’s top survivalists as they attempt to get out of Asia’s most hostile environments, and in Man, Woman & Child, Ed, his wife Laura Bingham – herself a world-renowned explorer, conservationist and wildlife presenter, best known for leading the world’s first descent of Guyana’s Essequibo River in South America – and their two year-old son, live off the grid on an Indonesian island for a month in search of a healthier family life.
Ed’s work combines adventure, education, and inspiration, earning him awards including European Adventurer of the Year and the prestigious Mungo Park Medal presented by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. Ed also authors books and delivers motivational talks, encouraging people to embrace challenges and connect with nature through adventure.
Tia Torres

Tia Maria Torres, host of Pit Bulls & Parolees
Tia Maria Torres is the founder of Villalobos Rescue Center and the host of Pit Bulls & Parolees, a long-running Discovery and Animal Planet series. Raised in a challenging home in Southern California, Tia found solace and strength in caring for animals from a young age, a value instilled by her stepmother. After leaving home at seventeen with her beloved pets, she navigated a series of tough jobs – including service in the Army and work as a youth gang counsellor – experiences that shaped her commitment to helping others.
Villalobos Rescue Center began as a haven for misunderstood pit bulls but soon expanded its mission to include giving parolees a second chance. Tia’s decision to employ parolees stemmed from her work in gang intervention and knowing that both dogs and people often need someone to believe in them. The program, suggested by a parole officer, proved transformative – parolees found stable work and purpose, while the dogs benefited from their dedication and care.
Pit Bulls & Parolees – which ran for thirteen years and over two hundred episodes – showcased Tia’s tireless efforts, her family’s involvement – including daughters Tania and Mariah and adopted twin sons Kanani and Moe – and the daily challenges of rescue work. The show’s blend of heartwarming rescues, tough love, and second chances resonated with viewers, helping to change perceptions, both about pit bulls, and men and women who have been released from prison looking for a second chance.
