Mercury is the innermost planet in our solar system, it is also the smallest and its orbit is the most eccentric. It orbits the sun in about 88 Earth days, completing three rotations about its axis for every two orbits. Mercury has a very elliptical orbit, so it comes as close as 47 million kilometres and goes as far away as 70 million kilometres from the sun.
