Bear Grylls
Bear Grylls – adventurer, mountaineer, Chief Scout and, um, barge owner…
That last one doesn’t exactly fit with his rugged image, but family is the centre of Bear’s life, and the barge is a big part of that life with his wife and kids.
Sure, he spent three years in the SAS – and while he was in the service had a free-falling parachuting accident where he broke his back in three places. And it’s true he was the youngest British climber to ever climb Mount Everest at 23 years of age – and climbed another mountain that Sir Edmund Hilary described as ‘unclimbable,’ a year earlier when he was 22.
Never mind that he’s a karate black belt, was the first person to paraglide over Everest, became the youngest ever Chief Scout and has also climbed a remote, previously unclimbed, mountain in Antarctica, the coldest place on earth, for the kids charity Global Angels.
Oh, and he was also in ‘Sure For Men’ advert as well…

Of course, that’s without even mentioning Born Survivor. Over the years Bear has travelled to far-flung places across the world to demonstrate how to survive.
If you were stranded in the wilderness, there are few people who’d be handier to have with you than Bear. Just ask 14-year-old John Denham. He used skills he’d seen on Born Survivor when he was stranded on his own halfway up Mount Bachelor in Oregon with night falling and temperatures dropping. Utilising those skills saved John’s life.
So, it can truly be said that Bear is doing it for the kids – his own, those who he raises money for and the 500,000 UK Scouts… and not forgetting all those big kids out there who now know if they find themselves in a tricky spot all they need to do is think of the words: ‘What would Bear do?’
Bear Grylls and the crew receive support when they are in potentially life threatening situations, as required by health and safety regulations.
On some occasions, situations are presented to Bear so he can demonstrate survival techniques.
Professional advice should always be sought before entering any dangerous environment.
