On 14th of March, 1964 Jack Ruby, one of the most notorious killers of all time, was sentenced to death.

Jack Ruby has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories throughout the decades since his murder of President John F Kennedy’s assassin Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963.

The man behind Oswald’s death was Dallas nightclub operator Jack Ruby who fatally wounded Oswald with one shot to the abdomen as he was being escorted from police headquarters. Ruby was subsequently charged with his murder and sentenced to death.

But, Jack Ruby was to actually die of cancer, before making it to the electric chair, on the 3rd of January 1967. Shocking statements made by Ruby before his death have been the subject of conspiracy theorists for many years since.

According to an article in the London Sunday Times in the run up to his trial, Ruby told psychiatrist Werner Teuter that he knew, "who had President Kennedy killed", and that, "I was framed to kill Oswald."

Just before the Kennedy assassination Ruby made contact with the man who, it is believed by many theorists, to have ordered the president’s killing.

Carlos Marcello – the New Orleans Mafia godfather – is said to have ordered the hit to rid himself of the attentions of the president’s brother Robert F Kennedy, the US Attorney General who was investigating organised crime at the time.

Watch as FBI informant Jack Van Laningham reveals his story for the first time.

Did you know…?

- In polls conducted from 1966-2004, 80% of the American public disbelieved the official description of the events surrounding the assassination of President John F Kennedy.
- In 1979, the House Select Committee on Assassinations issued its final report on the JFK assassination, in which it concluded: Lee Harvey Oswald fired the shots that killed the President; however, "scientific acoustical evidence establishes a high probability that two gunmen fired at President John F Kennedy," and that, "on the basis of the evidence available to it, that President John F Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy."
- The names of the war movies that were displayed outside the cinema in which Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested were Cry of Battle and War is Hell.
