Eli Roth has created many characters that personify the nature of evil in his films but what about the potential of evil in everyday people living an everyday life.

He examines what causes people to perform evil acts. Is evil inherently genetic? Can it be read in brain activity or even in the blood?

The tests include a recreation of the controversial Milgram experiment, which saw members of the public administering what they thought were painful and then potentially fatal electric shocks to strangers in another room.

The people administering the shocks were told they were participating in an experiment to help the learning process and were ordered to dispense an electric shock of increasing voltage when each answer was incorrectly given by the subject in the next room.

In actuality the electric shocks and screams of pain from the next room were all faked, with the true experiment investigating how far a person would go in administering the punishment in their subjects.

This was first undertaken 50 years ago and now Eli and his team recreate the experiment as part of their exploration into the potential for evil in everyday people.

Curiosity – How Evil Are You? is on Discovery Channel at 10pm Sunday 8th July.
