INTERVIEW

DAVID BADDIEL: WHAT MAKES MY WORLD BIGGER

David Baddiel with a bird of prey (DCL)

WHO OR WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?

Some idea of the truth. I have an overwhelming drive, sometimes slightly mad, to try and be as authentic as possible, and as true to myself, at all times.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

The above, mainly. And wanting to tell stories that are new and challenging and not told a million times before.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN LIFE?

Truth. (Feel I should move off from this subject. So also, y’know, family, kids, and of course, morris dancing).

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?

Being with my kids. Cats. Holidays.  Football, occasionally. More and more as I grow older, food.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR TOUGHEST MOMENT?

My mother’s death, in 2014.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST TREASURED MEMORY?

The birth of my two children. But also quite a lot of other stuff they’ve done since that particular moment.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

“Give the mundane its beautiful due” - John Updike. He didn’t just give it to me, to be fair.

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE OTHERS WANTING TO MAKE THEIR WORLD BIGGER?

Say yes. Generally. When someone suggests you go over there, even if you don’t know what’s over there, go. Unless the person doing the suggesting is wearing a frightening mask.

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON LIFE HAS TAUGHT YOU?

The truth is always complex.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

More wild travel documentaries. And more story-telling.
